ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Electro-optical technology company Lightwave Logic Inc. acquired a patent for a technology enabling enhanced optical routing architectures for polymer-based integrated photonics that can be scaled with its partner foundries. The patent “Guide Transition Device and Method” will enable highly scalable optical routing architectures for integrated photonic platforms. It provides optical waveguide transition designs using two planes of optical waveguides, for optical signal routing and switching.

PHOENIX — ON Semiconductor revealed new trade name “onsemi” and a pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. The company will continue its focus on the automotive and industrial end markets, as well as improving upon its strategy to contribute to a sustainable ecosystem of high-growth megatrends such as vehicle electrification, advanced safety, alternative energy, and factory automation.

AUBURN, Mass. — Physik Instrumente opened a Tech Center in Silicon Valley. The addition joins its existing sales and applications office in the Los Angeles area. The facility is expected to be used as a space for training, collaboration with customers, conferences, and permanent product demos.

MUNICH — Infineon Technologies AG, a provider of microelectronics and semiconductor solutions, revealed a MEMS scanner for augmented reality (AR). The scanner is composed of a MEMS mirror and MEMS driver; its miniature size and low power consumption are the basis to make AR solutions more widely available for consumer applications such as wearables and for automotive head-up displays. The company will collaborate with TriLite to develop an AR microprojector for use in AR smart glasses.

CHENNAI, India — The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) launched a consortium for virtual reality that is reportedly the first of its kind in India. The consortium’s membership is composed of those from academia, industry, startups, and government bodies. It will be coordinated by IIT-M. Its goal is to enable members to create technologies and applications in virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and haptics, in addition to the promotion of VR skill training and technology-enabled skill training.

AUSTIN, Texas — In its second decade, the Open Compute Project, focused on open standards and open source technology, has set a new agenda under recently elected chair Rebecca Weekly, of Intel. The agenda sets a number of points of focus for the current market landscape, as well as technological focuses for the future, including the promotion of optical and silicon technologies.
