The Boston University Photonics Center, in conjunction with the private venture firm Marenghi & Co., has established three commercial corporations. The aim of each company is to develop innovative technology originating at the center into commercially viable products. PhotoSecure Inc. is working on a class of photochemicals for the detection of pathogens and biological warfare agents, and the identification of counterfeit products that could pose a danger to the public. The second venture, PhotoSense Inc., is cultivating a series of "smart skins" that can be configured for patient monitoring, physical rehabilitation and automotive passenger safety. PhotoDetection Systems Inc. is developing advanced medical imaging systems for detecting cancer, characterizing the severity of cardiac emergencies and diagnosing brain disorders.
