PSI Acquires QCL Maker
ANDOVER, Mass., Sept. 4, 2009 -- Physical Sciences Inc. (PSI) has acquired quantum cascade laser (QCL) maker Maxion, the company annouced this week. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
College Park, Md.-based Maxion develops long-wavelength (3-12 µm) infrared semiconductor lasers, including QCLs, interband cascade lasers (ICLs) and related systems. The company was founded in 2000 by a team of scientists and engineers previously employed at the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Md.
PSI provides contract research and development services to US government and industrial customers in optical materials, lasers, photonic devices, and electro-optic systems, as well as producing specialty electro-optic components and systems.
"The acquisition of Maxion allows PSI to provide vertically-integrated QCL/ICL solutions to our customers, as well as continuing to provide QCL/ICL devices and R&D support to Maxion's existing OEM and research customers," said PSI President and CEO B. David Green.
He added that combining PSI's capabilities and system products with Maxion's design, fabrication and processing capabilities will provide advantages to its customers in general infrared electro-optic materials, devices and components.
