Osram to Focus on OLED Lighting Solutions
Osram Opto Semiconductors of Santa Clara, Calif., will stop producing passive matrix displays based on organic LEDs at year’s end. The 270 employees working on the display manufacturing line in Penang, Malaysia, will be transferred to other areas of the company, including Penang’s new LED chip production facility. The California-based company will change its focus to the development of market-ready OLED lighting solutions, after having manufactured and marketed passive matrix display since the end of 2003, under the brand name Pictiva. Because of reduced market demands, Osram’s attention has shifted to its core business, lighting solutions. Its first market-ready products are expected to launch in the next few years.
