Optra to Supply FBI with Laser Event Recorders
TOPSFIELD, Mass., June 30, 2010 — The FBI has awarded Optra Inc. a contract to supply laser event recorders (LERs) that will be utilized to fight the laser dazzle problem faced by pilots worldwide.
The ultraprecision measurement solutions provider originally developed the technology under a US Navy contract.
The LER can be used in the cockpit to detect a laser pointed in the direction of the aircraft, allowing the pilot to avoid eye contact while simultaneously capturing critical information that can be used to locate, apprehend and prosecute the offender pointing the handheld laser device.
The device collects diffracted images and processes them in real time by an onboard embedded controller to extract the laser event information. This is time-tagged with GPS information and saved to a removable flash disk. In addition, it provides real-time onboard visual warning of both laser radiation presence and levels of harmfulness to the eye.
