Optikos Gets $3.4M for Optical Focus Verification System

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 14, 2006 -- Optikos Corp., a maker of optical image quality metrology equipment, announced that it has been awarded a $3.4 million contract from ITT Systems Inc. of Colorado Springs, Colo., to produce an optical focus verification system (OFVS) for telescope-to-film and telescope-to-CCD camera image plane alignment.

The OFVS will be used by the US Air Force on five of the large-aperture launch tracking telescopes at the Eastern Range, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS), Fla. The telescopes are used during all launches from Cape Canaveral, including the space shuttle. Optikos's equipment will provide the capability to verify the correct focus of the tracking telescope prior to launch.

ITT Systems, a division of White Plains, N.Y.-based ITT Corp., manages the US Air Force Spacelift Range Support Contract for the operation and sustainment and depot maintenance requirements of the Eastern Range and the Western Range at Vandenberg AFB, Calif.

metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
telescope
An afocal optical device made up of lenses or mirrors, usually with a magnification greater than unity, that renders distant objects more distinct, by enlarging their images on the retina.
