Ophthalmic Laser System Cleared by FDA

CLERMONT-FERRAND, France, March 22, 2013 — Quantel Medical has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Vitra Multispot ophthalmic laser system for diabetic eye disease treatment.

The system combines pattern scanning and solid-state green laser technologies in a compact, portable platform, providing a solution for ophthalmologists treating epidemic levels of diabetic eye disease. An estimated 8.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes, and approximately 79 million are categorized as prediabetic by the American Diabetes Association.

"Ophthalmologists now can choose a laser that is designed specifically to help them respond to the burgeoning diabetes epidemic," said CEO Jean-Marc Gendre. "Efficient and less painful pattern-scanning delivery of laser to treat diabetic eye disease is no longer reserved for the elite treatment centers."

The Vitra Multispot completes the company’s line of photocoagulators, ranging from the Vitra 532-nm monospot system to the SupraScan 577-nm multispot platform.
