Ocean Optics Unveils New Science Curriculum

Ocean Optics has launched a new version of its Spectroscopy 101 curriculum for high school and college teaching laboratories, the company said recently.

Spectroscopy 101, written for use with the company's Red Tide and ChemUSB spectrophotometers, has been updated to work with the new OceanView software. Contents include an introduction to spectroscopy, key concepts and detailed instructions for conducting a range of experiments with students.

Spectroscopy techniques help students better understand what happens at the atomic and molecular levels when samples interact with light. By observing these interactions, students can identify different wavelengths within the photonic spectrum and quantify the amount of light being absorbed, reflected, scattered or emitted.

The seven updated experiments include: identification of commercial food dyes in beverages, absorbance measurement of chlorophyll extracted from spinach leaves, spectrophotometric characterization of spice extracts, and emission measurements of light sources.

Glossary
spectrophotometer
A spectrophotometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the intensity of light at various wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum, typically in the visible and ultraviolet regions. It is commonly employed in various fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, and environmental science for a wide range of applications, including chemical analysis, color measurement, and concentration determination of substances in a solution. Spectrophotometers operate by passing a beam of light...
