WASHINGTON, July 27, 2007 -- Oct. 9 is the deadline for submissions to the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Awards, which will debut at the 2008 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC), Feb. 24-28 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, Calif.

The award competition from Corning Inc., made possible through an endowment from the OSA Foundation, will recognize future leaders in optical communications. Papers will be ranked for innovation, research excellence and author presentation skills. The grand-prize winner will receive $1500; honorable mentions will be awarded $1000 each.

Submissions will be reviewed and scored by the OFC/NFOEC technical program committee according to standard review criteria. Undergraduate or graduate students devoting at least 50 percent of their time to studies in an academic environment who are the primary authors of a paper and who will present it at OFC/NFOEC are eligible. Awards will be presented at the post-deadline paper session Feb. 28.

Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
