Nokia, Ayar Labs Among Industry Players to Detail Milestones: Week in Brief: 03/03/23

Hamamatsu Photonics started construction on a factory at its Shingai site in Japan. The new site will serve to increase overall construction capacity in the post-processing (dicing, assembly, and inspection) of opto-semiconductor devices.

ESPOO, Finland — Nokia detailed a pair of what it reported to be record-breaking optical transport records in field trials on GlobalConnect’s live optical network in Europe. The demonstration used Nokia’s sixth-generation supercoherent Photonic Service Engine, PSE-6s, to achieve 1.2 Tbit/s over 118 km and 800 Gbit/s over 2019 km, both using a single wavelength.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Silicon photonics company Ayar Labs will demonstrate a 4-Tbit/s bidirectional wavelength division multiplexing optical solution at the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference. According to the company, the demonstration will show its optical I/O solution moving data from one TeraPHY optical I/O chiplet to another at 2.048 Tbit/s each direction powered by its SuperNova light source. SuperNova powers eight fiber links running error free at less than 10 ns of latency and without needing forward error correction. This allows for a total bandwidth of 2.048 Tbit/s each direction, or 4.096 Tbit/s bidirectional. The data transfer uses less than 5 pJ/bit.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Networking solutions provider Adtran completed a field trial of 800-Gbit/s single-carrier transport, achieving error-free transmission over a record distance of 2200 km in NYSERNet’s production network, the company said. The test route passed through 14 route-and-select flexgrid reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers comprising a total of 28 wavelength-selective switches.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Terabit BiDi Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) group published release 1.0 of its optical specifications for 800-Gbit/s and 1.6-Tbit/s optical interfaces over 70 m of OM4 multimode fiber. The MSA’s specifications use the widely adopted dual wavelength bidirectional transmission technology. This provides an upgrade path to the large-scale deployed parallel multimode fiber (MMF) cabling infrastructure. The specifications are built on the 100-Gbit/s Ethernet MMF specifications.

MARTINEZ, Calif. — EUV Tech, a producer of metrology equipment to semiconductor manufacturing using extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, secured series A funding led by Intel Capital. EUV will use the capital to support its worldwide installed base of equipment, enhance its existing product line, and deliver several products already under development. In conjunction with the financing, Sean Doyle, Intel Capital managing director, will join the board of directors to support EUV Tech’s growth.

GLASGOW, Scotland — The TITAN project, led by the University of Strathclyde, has received a £2 million ($2.4 million) investment by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) — part of UK Research and Innovation. The TITAN project is a consortium of 17 universities leading research in crucial segments of future communication networks. The consortium aims to establish a platform for research collaboration and engagement across academic, industrial, and governmental partners and conduct unique and transformative research on the interfaces of classic communication network elements to achieve the seamless, open, and fully integrated network of networks.

NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia — Silex Systems completed a $120 million institutional placement at an offer price of $4.05 per new share. Funds raised from the placement, along with existing cash, will be used to accelerate commercialization of the Silex laser enrichment technology, working capital, and general corporate purposes.

WARRINGTON, England — The Innovate UK Launchpad program awarded funds to nanomaterials developer Quantum Science to develop methods for upscaling its production of lead-free quantum dot inks. The scale-up project, running from March through August this year, will focus on synthesis processes for Quantum Science’s lead-free INFIQ quantum dot solutions.

CAMARILLO, Calif. — Semtech Corp., a high-performance semiconductor, IoT systems, and cloud connectivity service provider, demonstrated a 200G-per-lane optical transmission link enabled by the company’s FiberEdge 200G PAM4 physical medium dependents and Broadcom’s latest-generation digital signal processor physical layer.
