AmberWave Systems Corp., a Salem, N.H., developer of intellectual property relating to strained silicon and other advanced material technologies, announced an agreement with Purdue University to jointly develop technologies for the integration of semiconductor devices on III-V materials. Peide Ye, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue, will be the principal investigator. Ye is an expert in III-V MOSFET technology and atomic layer deposition (ALD) and was previously a researcher at Bell Laboratories of Lucent Technologies and Agere Systems. . . . Laserscope, a San Jose, Calif., maker of medical lasers and fiber optic delivery devices, announced that Miracle Laser, its distributor in China, has ordered over $7 million in GreenLight PV laser systems and fiber optic delivery devices, to be delivered over the next 12 months. Part of the order will be used to build a Center of Excellence program at academic centers in China, the company said. The devices are used in procedures for treatment of prostate disorders. . . . Manfred Schmidt was appointed business manager, medical products and Domenic Bucci as business manager, industrial products for Schott North America, based in Auburn, N.Y. Manfred has more than 30 years of technical sales, marketing and business development experience, previously at Schott headquarters in Germany. Schott North America has two US sites, in Auburn and in Southbridge, Mass., that make fiber optic and LED illumination and imaging products for machine vision, industrial OEM, microscopy, forensic, defense and medical applications. . . . Thomas M. Baer was named executive director of the Stanford Photonics Research Center (SPRC). Baer was formerly CEO, chairman and founder of Arcturus Bioscience, which makes laser microdissection instrumentation and integrated bioreagent systems for precise genetic analysis of tissue samples. Arcturus products are being developed for use with cancer diagnostic tests. His previous positions included vice president of research at Biometric Imaging and vice president of research and senior research fellow at Spectra-Physics Inc. Baer is named as an inventor on many US patents and is an author of numerous scientific publications.
