Headwall Photonics of Fitchburg, Mass., announced that its Raman Explorer OEM product was selected by Hamilton Sundstrand’s Applied Instrument Technologies (HS-AIT) group in Pomona, Calif., for use with the company’s new line of process analyzers. Using Headwall’s Raman Explorer as the spectral engine, the companies said HS-AIT has established new performance capabilities for in-line and at-line process monitoring instruments within the refining, chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries. . . . Novalux Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., a developer of Novalux extended cavity surface-emitting laser (NECSEL) technology, announced yesterday that it has entered into a joint development and license agreement with microdisplay manufacturer Seiko Epson Corp. (Epson) for NECSEL-based RGB (red, green, blue) illumination devices used in microdisplay-based products such as projection TVs. Under the agreement, Novalux will license its RGB laser reference design and supply Epson with NECSEL semiconductor chips. Epson will use the chips to develop optical engines for integration into its high-temperature polysilicon 3LCD projectors. When used in a 3LCD optical engine, Novalux said, NECSEL sources eliminate the need for polarizers, color filters, turning mirrors and fly's eye lenses and perform better, last longer and cost less to produce than ultrahigh performance (UHP) lamp-based systems. . . . Diagnostic imaging systems maker Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc. of Tustin, Calif., received FDA clearance for its Excelart Vantage ZGV magnetic resonance imaging system, used for advanced cardiac imaging applications. The company says the system can reconstruct up to 1300 images per second and reduce acoustic noise by as much as 90 percent. Optional packages are available for cardiac imaging, advanced echo planar imaging, perfusion and diffusion imaging, peripheral MRA (magnetic resonance angiography) and superFASE (fast advanced spin echo) imaging. Field upgrade kits are available for current Vantage users.
