Taylor W. Lawrence, PhD, was appointed vice president, engineering, technology and mission assurance, at Raytheon Co., effective April 10. Lawrence was formerly sector vice president and general manager, C4ISR & Space Sensors Div., for Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems. He previously was staff director for the Select Committee on Intelligence for the US Senate and was deputy director at that Information Systems Office of DARPA. Lawrence has also held a variety of scientific and research leadership positions, including director of advanced technology for the Defense Airborne Reconnaissance Office; deputy program leader, Advanced Imaging, Imaging & Detection Program of the Lasers Directorate at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; senior staff scientist of the Research & Development Div. of Trex Enterprises; and research assistant and undergraduate research fellow in the Department of Physics at the California Institute of Technology. . . . Corning Inc. announced that a US District Court judge has ruled that SRU Biosystems of Woburn, Mass., infringed on a Corning patent and also induced a customer to infringe the patent through its testing activities. The patent in question is licensed to Corning from Artificial Sensing Instruments (ASI) AG of Zurich, Switzerland, for optical biosensors that enable label-independent detection of chemical, biochemical and biological substances in a sample. The US District Court of Delaware concluded that Corning is entitled to a permanent injunction against SRU Biosystems. A court ruled in November that the Corning patent was valid, and the ruling this week was regarding enforcability of the patent. Corning is using the technology in its soon-to-be-released Epic system. . . . Cymer Inc., a San Diego provider of deep ultraviolet (DUV) excimer laser light sources used in semiconductor manufacturing, has announced an agreement to collaborate with KLA-Tencor, a San Jose, Calif., supplier of process control and yield management systems for the semiconductor industry. As part of the agreement, Cymer will provide details of light source spectra to be incorporated into KLA-Tencor's Prolith lithography optimization tool. Cymer said they expect to continue to jointly develop enhancements to this capability for subsequent Prolith revisions. The companies have been collaborating on simulating the impact of laser bandwidth on critical dimensions (CD) for more than five years. . . . The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) is offering two $500 scholarships to two full-time students in science or engineering programs related to environmental sciences: the Eugene Borson Scholarship, for an original technical paper on a topic related to the environmental sciences in connection with controlled environments, particularly through contamination control and nanotechnologies in which products and equipment are manufactured, processed, or tested; and the Park Espenschade Memorial Scholarship, for a paper(s) on a topic related to the environmental sciences. To be eligible, a student must be entering sophomore year or above in an accredited institution, be enrolled full-time, be pursuing a science or engineering minor or major and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
