LightPath Technologies Inc., an Orlando, Fla.-based manufacturer of precision-molded aspheric optics, glass products and high-performance fiber-optic collimators and isolators, announced the first production output of molded aspheric lenses from its new 17,000 sq. ft. facility in Jiading, Shanghai, China. The company says the operation was established to increase production capacity, enabling it to compete for larger-volume orders of optical components and assemblies and strengthen partnerships in the Asia/Pacific region. The Jiading operation, which currently employs 27, will also house LightPath's Asia/Pacific sales, marketing and engineering organizations, enabling its Orlando headquarters to concentrate on lower-volume, quick-turn manufacturing and optical product development. . . . Lighting manufacturer Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH of Munich and semiconductor company Avago Technologies of San Jose, Calif., have signed a limited patent cross-license agreement. Osram will let Avago manufacture and sell white LEDs with special conversion technology and surface mount (SMT) LEDs, while Avago Technologies has given Osram a patent license covering LED systems, including systems for projection and flat-panel LCDs. Conversion technology enables the production of white LEDs using blue-emitting InGaN (indium gallium nitride)-based chips and a suitable fluorescent converter. SMT mounting forms are very small and allow easy processing in industrial series manufacturing. Osram holds patents for several mounting forms and packages for SMT LEDs, and has previously signed licensing agreements with Nichia, Rohm Everlight, Lite On, Stanley, Harvatek, Ya Shin, Vishay, Samsung Electro Mechanics and Lednium. . . . James E. (Jim) Gallagher, former chairman of the board of SEMI and co-founder of GCA Corp., died Feb. 7 at age 85. Gallagher, of Acton, Mass., had a strong influence on the semidconductor industry in its formative years, SEMI reported. In 1958, he co-founded GCA Corp. with Milt Greenberg; in 1988, it was sold to General Signal. Gallagher held a number of positions at GCA, including director and senior vice president of operations in charge of GCA's IC Systems Group. He was president and chairman of the SEMI board from 1978-1980. In 1981, he was honored by the Semiconductor Equipment Marketing Council of Japan for his contributions to US-Japan trade relations.
