Corning Inc. has received government approval to ship its active LCD glass substrates from its Taichung, Taiwan, manufacturing facility. Corning broke ground on the Taichung facility in July 2004 and plans to invest approximately $1.5 billion in the plant by 2007. Corning says the Taichung facility will ultimately manufacture Generation 5.5, Generation 6, Generation 7.5 and larger glass substrates used in desktop monitors and LCD TVs. . . . Semiconductor design software maker Synopsys of Mountain View, Calif., has named Brian Beattie as its new CFO, effective Jan. 16. Beattie joins Synopsys from software company SupportSoft, where he had served as executive vice president of finance and administration and CFO since October 1999. . . . Brookfield, Conn.-based Photronics Inc., a provider of photomask-based imaging solutions for the global electronics and display industries, announced that Scott J. Gish will join the company in the newly created position of vice president, global sales & business development, effective Dec. 30. A 25-year veteran of the semiconductor and data storage industries, Gish joins Photronics from Veeco Instruments, where he served as vice president of sales since 2003.
