William Polito was named CFO of worldwide operations at Melles Griot. Polito was formerly finance director for Melles Griot Optics Group in Rochester, N.Y., and has been with the company for 17 years. Previously, he was controller at MD Laboratories. Polito replaces Eugene Smith, who will be finance director for Barloworld Scientific, Melles Griot's parent company. . . . Optical and imaging components manufacturer Edmund Optics (EO) of Barrington, N.J., has increased its capacity to make complex coatings with more than 100 layers by adding a new 45-in.-diameter coating chamber manufactured by Vacuum Process Technology of Plymouth, Mass. EO said the fully automated coater more than doubles its ability to make medium and high-end coated parts used in polarizers, laser mirrors, short-wave pass and long-wave pass filters, beamsplitters and dichroic color filters as well as multilayer custom designs. Equipped with two electron guns and planetary rotation and a high-output ion gun, the chamber produces durable shift-free coatings, and both quartz crystal and optical monitoring improve its ability to meet coating tolerances of less than ±1 percent, EO said.NVE Corp. of Eden Prairie, Minn, a seller of spintronic products, was awarded additional Bio-Magnetic Interfacing Concepts (BioMagnetICs) program funding by the Defense Sciences Office of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, bringing NVE's funding under the contract, first announced in 2002, to nearly $2 million. NVE said it will optimize spintronic system components and develop high-volume fabrication processes with the new funding. . . . High-power LED manufacturer Lumileds Lighting US LLC of San Jose, Calif., announced that the US International Trade Commission voted unanimously to investigate its complaint of patent infringement by Taiwan-based LED makers Epistar Corp. and United Epitaxy Co. Ltd. (UEC). The complaint alleges that Epistar's omnidirectional mirror adhesion AlGaInP LED products and UEC's metal bond and glue bond AlGaInP LED products infringe on one or more of Lumileds' patents. Lumileds seeks to bar the LEDs, and products that use them, from entering the US. Lumileds said it also filed a complaint against UEC and Epistar in the US District Court for the Northern District of California alleging infringement of the same patents. . . . New Source Technology LLC has moved to a larger facility in Pleasanton, Calif. The 5000-square-foot facility is part of an expansion plan the company began earlier this year and will allow for a sizeable increase in manufacturing and customer service space, it said. New Source has also signed an agreement with Excel Electro Optics of Boston to represent its products in the eastern US. New Source makes products used in the OEM laser and electro-optics markets including flashlamps, arc lamps, optics, YAG rods, laser cavities and power supplies.
