Hendrik J.M. Weerts was named director of the High Energy Physics Div. at the US Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory. Weerts, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University, spent last year at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory doing research on the proposed International Linear Collider and on the DO (DZero) Experiment, a worldwide collaboration of scientists conducting research on the fundamental nature of matter. That research is focused on precise studies of interactions of protons and antiprotons at the highest available energies, searching for subatomic clues that reveal the character of the building blocks of the universe. Weerts has been a member of the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel to the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation and is a fellow of the American Physical Society. In 2003, he became editor of the physics research journal Physics Letters B.    . . .    Bruker Daltonics Inc., a Billerica, Mass.-based provider of mass spectrometry products for the life sciences, has appointed Sebastian Meyer-Plath as vice president of its nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) detection business. He will also be a managing director of Bruker Daltonik GmbH with responsibility for the Bruker Daltonik operation in Leipzig, Germany. Meyer-Plath joined Bruker in 1993 and held project and product management positions in its NBC detection and life-science systems businesses. In 2002, he joined life science startup Advalytix AG in Germany, then became vice president of sales and marketing for UK and international defense markets at Smiths Detection.    . . .    Eastman Kodak Co. announced that Ying Yeh and Warren A. Wisnewski will lead its operations in Asia, effective immediately. They replace Karen A. Smith-Pilkington, a senior vice president of the company and chairman and president, Greater Asia Region, who resigned for personal reasons, Kodak said. Its Greater Asia Region will be divided into North Asia and South Asia regions. Yeh, who was named chairman and president of the North Asia Region, is currently chairman of Kodak's Greater China and general manager of external affairs for the Greater Asia Region. She will remain a vice president responsible for external affairs in Asia. Wisnewski was named chairman of the South Asia Region, vice president of international operations and operations manager of the North Asia Region. Glossary
astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
