IRVINE, Calif., May 12, 2006 -- Newport Corp. is a manufacturer of advanced technology products and solutions for fields such as research, life and health science, aerospace and defense, industrial manufacturing, semiconductors and microelectronics. It is the world’s leading supplier of photonics technologies, offering the most extensive selection of lasers, high-quality light sources and instrumentation, optical tables, mounts and mirrors, motion and vibration control, and optics and optomechanical hardware. With a long history of quality, innovation and collaboration, Newport is a premier global resource for solutions that make, manage and measure light.

Newport Corp.'s worldwide headquarters is located in Irvine, Calif.
Established in 1969 as Newport Research Corp., the company first gained recognition in the advanced technology manufacturing and development field for its steel-clad, honeycomb-core tables designed to isolate laser experiments from vibration. But as holography, interferometry and other laser technologies progressed, so did Newport Corp., expanding its product offerings to meet the evolving needs of scientists and engineers. Today, Newport manufactures an array of advanced technology products in addition to its vibration control tables, and communicates with clients to ensure that the products they pioneer will aid and advance the work of the people who use them. Because of its commitment to quality, innovation, hard work and customer care, Newport is recognized as the complete source for all photonics and laser technology and equipment.NewportSmartTable.jpg
Newport has produced the worlds finest optical tables since 1969. The ST series SmartTable incorporates Newport’s patent-pending intelligent Q technology to actively monitor, report and adjust table-damping performance over a wide frequency band. This provides a dramatically quieter table surface, resulting in high-quality imaging, long-term stability, faster settling times and the ability to make measurements that previously required the quietest lab environments.
Newport’s nearly 40 years of industry knowledge and expertise crosses a broad range of technologies, allowing the company to continually deliver innovative products and solutions in a  myriad of areas such as: lasers (the company was a pioneer in this field) and light sources, optomechanical components and mounts, optical filters and gratings, spectroscopic and photonic instruments, vibration control, motion systems, robotics and automation, advanced packaging and customized systems. The company is well respected for its high-quality optical tables, generally considered the most advanced in the industry. For example, the SmartTable is the highest performance optical table available, offering 10 times better damping performance over other competitive solutions. With more than 10,000 quality products for managing light -- including industry-leading Suprema mounts and XPS motion control solutions -- no one delivers more options at better value than Newport.

Newport is the only company in the photonics industry that provides its customers with complete solutions to make, manage and measure light.
Newport serves customers across Canada, Europe, Asia and the US through nine international subsidiaries and 24 sales offices worldwide. The company has merged with a number of companies over the last 15 years, and each has broadened and strengthened the company’s product offerings and technology. The most recent of these happened in 2004, when Newport moved closer to realizing its full potential as a single source provider through the acquisition of Spectra-Physics laser manufacturing.

Founded in 1961 and headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., Spectra-Physics designs, develops, manufactures and distributes premier lasers and laser systems for a variety of commercial and industrial markets such as life and health science, aerospace and defense, computers, telecommunications, research and development, OEM and microelectronics. NewportQuantaRay.jpg
The worlds leading pulsed Nd:YAG laser, the Quanta-Ray Pro series, features solid design concepts, advanced component parts and materials and a meticulous approach to quality and product testing, consistently and reliably outperforming all other Nd:YAG lasers on the market.
The merger added over 5000 products to the more than 10,000 products already offered by Newport Corp., and with Spectra-Physics came its other well-known brands, such as Oriel Instruments, Richardson Grating Laboratory, Corion Filters and Hilger Crystals. As a combined force, Newport and Spectra-Physics has the ability to provide the advanced technology community with not only outstanding research and development, but also extensive experience and expertise.

Spectra-Physics has a long tradition of innovation. It introduced the first high power, diode-pumped, all-solid-state continuous wave laser, the Millennia, and the first commercially available ultrafast titanium:sapphire laser, the Tsunami. Spectra-Physics offers a complete portfolio of lasers for scientific, industrial and OEM applications, including:

  • Ultrafast
  • Tunable
  • Diode lasers and modules
  • High-energy pulsed
  • Diode-pumped, all solid-state
  • HeNe
  • Ion
  • Nitrogen
  • Light sources
Through its Oriel product line and Precision Photonic Technologies Div., Newport offers light sources that cover the range from the ultraviolet to the infrared; pulsed or continuous, and low- to high-power systems. Newportoptomech.jpg

Newport's optomechanical components, optics and stages. For more than 30 years, Newport has manufactured the world’s most comprehensive line of optical mounts and positioners. Its precision mechanics help researchers and companies stay at the leading edge.
Newport purchased the commercial optics division of Corning OCA Inc. in 1999 to create Newport Precision Optics, which has taken Newport Corp. to a new level of design and manufacturing capability with high performance optical elements, optical systems and value-added optomechanical subassemblies. Newport Corp. acquired RAM Optical Instrumentation Inc. in 1995, a renowned manufacturer of video-based measurement and inspection systems. Newport now has automated manufacturing systems for fiber-optic device assembly. Also in 1995, Newport acquired Light Control Instruments Inc. of San Luis Obispo, Calif., to broaden its laser diode instrumentation and test system offerings.

Newportpowermeter.jpg

For applications requiring measurement of low-power, high-power or energy of continuous or pulsed light sources, Newport’s model 2935-C has broken the barrier of temporal measurement perfomance with calibrated results. This power/energy meter has the ability to handle repetition-rates of up to 10 kHz at a sampling rate of 250 kHz. Simultaneous measurements of a variety of light sources operating at different power levels and wavelengths can be performed with its dual-channel optical meters.

In 1991, Newport purchased the micro-positioning products division of Micro-Controle of Evry, France, which had a worldwide reputation for their manufacturing and design of ultrahigh precision positioning and motion control systems. Newport has since become a global leader in these systems.

By leveraging its expertise and experience, and through strategic acquisition and development, Newport stays at the forefront of technological innovation to continually bring advanced products and solutions to meet its customers’ advanced technology needs. Whether customers need help with concept to product, build to print, or variation on a standard, Newport offers support every step of the way. Its services range from design analysis and verification to rapid prototyping and documentation support that includes assembly and test documents, work instruction and more.

Newport’s applications lab develops solutions for its customers’ specific needs in the research and scientific market. Using collaborative relationships with key educational institutions and its own in-house expertise, the members of this team collect, synthesize and disseminate data about products and applications in order to develop educational kits, accessory kits, product bundles, application kits, application notes, and complete solutions and systems that help its customers remain on the cutting edge. Whether its academic research customers are pioneering advances in biophotonics, nanophotonics, ultrafast lasers and light sources, they look to Newport for the most complete line of photonics products and services to support their leading-edge research projects.
