Newly Formed Aalyria Repurposes Tech for Advanced Optical Networking

Backed by Silicon Valley investors, including the founders of Accel, J2 Ventures, and Housatonic, Aalyria has officially launched as an independent company. A spinout of Google’s parent company Alphabet, Aalyria uses advanced networking and laser communications technologies to orchestrate and manage complex networks around the world, extending them into areas without connectivity infrastructure — and at an exponentially greater scale and speed than anything currently available, according to the company.

Aalyria is commercializing these technologies with both private sector and government partners and has already secured an $8 million contract with the Defense Innovation Unit to help develop secure internet connectivity throughout the space domain for both private and public sector customers. The technologies Aalyria uses were originally developed at Alphabet as part of its wireless connectivity efforts. Spacetime is Aalyria’s intelligent network orchestration technology and Tightbeam is its advanced atmospheric laser communications technology.

Spacetime is a software platform for orchestrating and managing networks of ground stations, aircraft, satellites, ships, urban meshes, and more. It optimizes and continually evolves the antenna link scheduling, network traffic routing, and spectrum resources — responding in real time to changing network requirements. Spacetime operates networks at any altitude or orbit type, supports all radio frequency bands and optical wavelengths, and is designed for interoperability with legacy, hybrid space, 5G NTN, and FutureG network architectures.

Additionally, Spacetime is asset and domain agnostic, meaning that it can orchestrate networks across nearly anything that is connectivity-equipped on Earth or in space. As the number of networks adopting Spacetime continues to grow, it will provide those network operators with unprecedented flexibility to craft agreements with each other that share spectrum or network resources across space and time, according to Aalyria.

Tightbeam coherent light free space optics technology operates 100 to 1000 times faster than anything else available today and covers greater distances than previously imagined, according to Aalyria. Tightbeam’s coherent light laser moves data intact through the atmosphere and weather, and it offers connectivity where no supporting infrastructure exists.

In the future, Aalyria seeks to facilitate the coordination and sharing of network resources across multiple networks with unlimited connections. Aalyria’s team includes technical experts with experience at Google, Amazon, Meta, NASA, Cisco, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Lockheed Martin, and more.

adaptive optics
Adaptive optics (AO) is a technology used to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effects of atmospheric distortions. The Earth's atmosphere can cause light passing through it to experience distortions, resulting in image blurring and degradation in various optical applications, such as astronomical observations, laser communications, and imaging systems. Adaptive optics systems actively adjust the optical elements in real-time to compensate for these distortions. Key...
