Aborn Eye Research Center and Opticology Inc., both of New York, have received a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer grant from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to further develop an ophthalmic device for measuring centrally located pathological areas of nonvision on the retina. With a combination of software and optical hardware, patients suffering from macular degeneration and other retinal defects can maintain fixation. The technique promises the more accurate measurement of the central and paracentral visual fields. The clinical trials of the device will be performed at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
