NEFC to Sponsor Nufern Tour, Perspective

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass., May 1, 2007 -- The New England Fiberoptic Council (NEFC) will host a tour of Nufern, a maker of optical fiber and fiber laser modules, June 28 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the company's headquarters in East Granby, Conn. After the tour, Nufern President/CEO Martin Seifert will host a presentation on specialty fibers, including a 10-year perspective on and projections for the industry.

"Specialty fibers for a variety of applications have stimulated entrepreneurs and Fortune 100 corporations alike to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the industry over the past decade," the NEFC said in a statement.

Seifert has been in the specialty fiber and electronics industries for more than 20 years and previously held management positions at Lucent Specialty Fibers, Spectran, Rockwell Automation and Schweitzer Engineering Labs. The cost for the tour and presentation, which is open to the public, is $40 for NEFC members and $45 for non-members and includes dinner.

Glossary
optical fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand or filament made of glass or plastic used for transmitting light signals over long distances with minimal loss of signal quality. It serves as a medium for conveying information in the form of light pulses, typically in the realm of telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. The core of an optical fiber is the central region through which light travels. It is surrounded by a cladding layer that has a lower refractive index than...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
