Horiba Scientific’s MicOS Microscope Optical Spectrometer was named “One of the Best New Instruments of the Year 2013” at the Annual Conference of China Scientific Instruments in Beijing on April 18. The MicOS was the only microspectrometer among 20 products recognized.

MicOS combines a microscope head directly coupled to a three-gratings imaging spectrometer and a research-grade scientific camera. It has a UV-VIS-NIR range from 200 to 1600 nm, allowing the characterization of different types of materials such semiconductor and biological samples. It is suited to photoluminescence, electroluminescence and photoreflectance measurements at the microscopic level.

Glossary
photoluminescence
Photoluminescence is a phenomenon in which a material absorbs photons (light) at one wavelength and then re-emits photons at a longer wavelength. This process occurs when electrons in the material are excited to higher energy states by absorbing photons and subsequently return to lower energy states, emitting photons in the process. The emitted photons have less energy and longer wavelengths than the absorbed photons. Photoluminescence can be broadly categorized into two types: ...
