Mass General, Infraredx Partner to Explore Cardiovascular Imaging Devices

Infraredx is teaming up with Massachusetts General Hospital and researcher Dr. Gary Tearney to develop new and combination technologies to provide enhanced information about coronary disease in patients.

“Coronary imaging has rapidly evolved over the past decade and has become an important part of the practice of diagnostic and interventional cardiology,” said Tearney, a professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School and founder of the Tearney Lab at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Mass General.

He is best known for his work developing optical coherence tomography (OCT), which measures light scattering to image coronary arteries.

Tearney and Infraredx collaborated more than a decade ago on the development of the company’s near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology. The company’s intravascular TVC Imaging System, which incorporates NIRS and ultrasound, is FDA-approved for identifying lipid core plaques, which are known to complicate stenting procedures and suspected to cause most heart attacks.

near-infrared spectroscopy
Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive analytical technique that uses the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum to study the absorption of light by molecules in a sample. This technique is commonly applied in fields such as chemistry, biology, medicine, and agriculture for qualitative and quantitative analysis of various substances. Key features and principles of near-infrared spectroscopy include: Near-infrared region: NIRS typically covers the spectral...
