Glasgow, Scotland-based M Squared Lasers Ltd. has announced a partnership with the University of St. Andrews, in Fife, to develop and commercialize a new laser-based source that they said will have applications including medical diagnostics, nondestructive testing and the detection of greenhouse gases, drugs, explosives and other hazardous materials. M Squared Lasers, formed in 2005 by Graeme Malcolm and Gareth Maker, will produce products based on novel mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) laser technology developed by the Photonics Innovation Centre and Nonlinear Optics Group at St. Andrews. M Squared makes diode-pumped solid-state lasers and related systems for scientific research and commercial applications. Malcolm and Maker were previously cofounders of Microlase Optical Systems, which was sold to Coherent Inc. in 1999.
