M Squared Lasers Secures $6M in Capital

M Squared Lasers has received £3.85 million (about $6.2 million) of growth capital from Business Growth Fund (BGF) to fund its research and development program and its commercial growth.

BFG will take a minority stake in the business and will join M Squared Lasers’ board.

Founded in 2005 by Dr. Graeme Malcolm and Dr. Gareth Maker, M Squared Lasers designs and manufactures lasers and photonic optical instruments for remote sensing, frontier science, biophotonics, defense, microscopy, spectroscopy and metrology applications.

Peter Bordui, the former chairman of Bookham Technology, has joined M Squared Lasers’ board as chairman.

“We are seeing considerable expansion in the potential applications for lasers, not least in the defense and medical industries where detection capability is critically important,” Malcolm said. “For us, this offers real growth potential. BGF’s investment will allow us to further develop our laser technology and fund our sales and marketing efforts.”

Glossary
metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
remote sensing
Remote sensing is a method of data collection and observation where information about objects, areas, or phenomena on Earth's surface is gathered from a distance, typically using sensors onboard satellites, aircraft, drones, or other platforms. This technique enables the monitoring and analysis of Earth's surface and atmosphere without direct physical contact. Remote sensing systems capture electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light, infrared, microwave, or radio waves) reflected or...
