Lumera Signs Agreements

Lumera Corp. of Bothell, Wash., has signed an agreement with the Pennsylvania State University Electro-Optics Center in Freeport, Pa., by which it will develop polymer-based electro-optic modulators for the detection of terahertz radiation to advance noninvasive imaging. The center promotes the development of electro-optic materials, components and systems for defense applications. The contract is valued at $400,000.

In other news, Lumera has been awarded a one-year extension of a US government contract to develop technologically advanced wideband optic modulators. The devices enable a new generation of fiber optic systems to increase bandwidth. The extension accounts for $1 million of the contract’s $5.7 million value.

Glossary
terahertz radiation
Electromagnetic radiation with frequencies between 300 GHz and 10 THz, and existing between regions of the electromagnetic spectrum that are typically classified as the far-infrared and microwave regions. Because terahertz waves have the ability to penetrate some solid materials, they have the potential for applications in medicine and surveillance.
