BEIJING, June 10 -- Lucent Technologies announced today that it has been awarded an optical networking contract with Beijing Communication Corp. (BCC), a subsidiary of China Netcom, to build an advanced optical network connecting Beijing's suburbs. Lucent said the award is worth "tens of millions" of dollars.

Lucent will deploy a variety of systems and software products, including the Metropolis ADM MultiService Mux, WaveStar ADM16/1, Navis Optical Dynamic Network Analyzer , Navis Optical Network Management System and WaveStar ITM-SC to construct 10 G optical rings for BCC, enabling BCC to dramatically increase its network capacity in the Beijing area and easing the migration from a traditional voice network to a multiservice transport network.

Jason Chi, president and chairman of Lucent China, said, "This will help BCC build an extendible and scalable optical ring that will meet their future business growth needs, and provide the reliability and capability required for network migration. This contract enhances our longstanding strategic relationship with China Netcom and helps promote Lucent's leading role in Beijing's metro optical equipment market."
