MURRAY HILL, N.J. and BRUSSELS, Belgium, Feb. 14, 2006 -- Lucent Technologies today announced that it has been awarded a contract by the European Commission, Directorate General Information Society and Media, to provide a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing the availability of Europe's electronic communications infrastructure, including its Internet and mobile networks. Details of the contract, including its time frame and its value in dollars, were not disclosed.
The purpose of the study is to analyze and identify the impact of threats and vulnerabilities on core (backbone), mobile and wireless networks, with a goal of developing recommendations for action by public authorities and industry players to secure Europe's electronic communications infrastructures.
Bell Labs, Lucent's research and development arm, is currently performing a related project with the US Government's Sandia National Labs to support the US Department of Homeland Security by modeling and simulating the impact of significant communications disruptions on US critical communications infrastructures.
