Life Technologies Corp. has purchased Advanced Microscopy Group (AMG), a developer of imaging systems for research microscopy, to expand Life Technologies’ cell imaging instrumentation product line. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Under the agreement, the existing business of privately held AMG — incorporated as Westover Scientific Inc. — will remain in Bothell, Wash., and will join Life Technologies’ Flow Cytometry and Imaging business unit. AMG’s portfolio of imaging instruments spans basic to advanced microscopy. The company developed Life Technologies’ FLoid cell imaging station, a fluorescent microscopy platform. The acquisition also provides product development opportunities for both laboratory and portable imaging devices. Life Technologies’ Molecular Probes range of fluorescent dyes and reagents for research applications complement AMG’s EVOS line of microscopes. Adding AMG’s technology will enable the company to offer a complete portfolio of integrated microscopy solutions, said Peter Dansky, president of molecular and cell biology at Life Technologies.
