ALBANY, N.Y., Nov. 8, 2024 — The Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (Leibniz-IPHT) and the State University of New York at Albany (SUNY Albany) have established the Center for Biophotonic Technology and Artificial Intelligence (CeBAI) at SUNY Albany’s campus. The center will focus on developing solutions for medicine and forensics using photonic technologies and AI, and to accelerate their path to market.

“We expect this collaboration to result not only in a large number of research projects, but also in several spin-off companies developing diagnostic and forensic innovations,” said Jürgen Popp, professor and scientific director at Leibniz-IPHT.

The first joint research projects are expected to begin in early 2025, with Leibniz-IPHT providing the necessary technologies and equipment to be installed in SUNY Albany’s laboratories. Joint workshops and conferences are also being planned for the coming year.

“Our goal is to advance these biophotonic methods for various medical applications, such as the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases,” Popp said.

CeBAI is the product of a partnership the two institutions entered into in 2022, where they agreed to establish the center with the goal of promoting scientific exchange and creating joint training and exchange opportunities for students and postdoctoral fellows.
