Laserscope Reports Positive Results in Leg Vein Study

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 8 -- Laserscope announced that results of a clinical study using the company's Lyra Laser System to treat leg veins show early promise. Brian D. Zelickson of the University of Minnesota and the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Laser Center is leading the study.
We recently started investigating the responses of deeper leg veins, up to 3 mm in diameter, to the Lyra long-pulse Nd:YAG laser system, reported Zelickson. Preliminary results from several patients have exceeded our expectations. We have seen up to an 80% reduction in the appearance of leg veins after only one treatment. We are very encouraged by these results and are planning to continue the investigation for the next three months on a greater number of patients. Laserscope said it has received marketing clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of vascular lesions, or leg veins, with the Lyra system.
