The Board of Laser Safety in Orlando, Fla., a nonprofit organization affiliated with the Laser Institute of America, is offering a certified laser safety officer examination. Requirements for taking the exam include a four-year degree from an accredited institution, or a two-year degree or high school diploma with work experience in the field.The three-hour test will cover nine areas, including the fundamentals of lasers and optics, the biological effects of radiation, nonbeam hazards, regulations and standards. It will be administered March 8 in Jacksonville, Fla., and Oct. 11 in San Francisco and Boston. Applications for the March exam must be postmarked by Feb. 15.
