Laser Components, PicoQuant to Develop Photon Counters

OLCHING, Germany, Sept. 16, 2010 — Laser and optoelectronic components and services manufacturer Laser Components GmbH announced it has forged a strategic alliance with PicoQuant GmbH of Berlin, to develop and commercialize photon counters.

Working together, Laser Components DG Inc. will manufacture and develop the highly sensitive avalanche photodiodes (APDs), while PicoQuant will supply the electronics for the photon counters.

The companies will develop two different series: the photon counters for non-time-resolved applications, trademarked Count through Laser Components’ worldwide distributors, and the –Spad, a module series for time-resolved applications that is available through PicoQuant.

Assembly and subsequent testing of both types of modules are being performed at each of the company’s headquarters.

Both series feature never-before-seen quantum efficiency and extremely low dark count rates, said both companies.

“PicoQuant possesses great application know-how and enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide in the photon counting market,” said Patrick Paul, general manager of Laser Components. “Even though the APD technology, which is at the heart of the system, is our own, it is important for us to bring in another partner. The synergies of this alliance are promising.”

PicoQuant manufactures picosecond diode lasers and time-resolved fluorescence systems.

Glossary
electronics
That branch of science involved in the study and utilization of the motion, emissions and behaviors of currents of electrical energy flowing through gases, vacuums, semiconductors and conductors, not to be confused with electrics, which deals primarily with the conduction of large currents of electricity through metals.
fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
photon counter
A device used to evaluate the luminance of a surface by determining the number of photons emitted from a sample surface area.
quantum efficiency
Quantum efficiency (QE) is a measure of the effectiveness with which a device or system, typically in the context of photonics or electronics, converts incoming photons (light) into a useful output signal or response. It is expressed as a ratio or percentage and quantifies the number of electrons or charge carriers generated in response to the incident photons. In other words, quantum efficiency provides a measure of how well a device can capture and utilize photons to produce an electric...
