BOCA RATON, Fla., Jan. 17 -- The HairMax LaserComb has received certification by the Canadian government as a class 2 medical device "for claims and indications to strengthen hair, prevent hair loss and stimulate regrowth of scalp hair in men and women," said its manufacturer, Lexington International.

The company said the low-level laser device improves the quality and thickness of hair. In the US, the LaserComb is classified as a cosmetic device. Clinical data will be presented to the US Food and Drug Adminitration in mid-2003, the company said.

Lexington International had its beginnings in Sydney, Australia, where a prototype of the LaserComb was developed. The company moved its headquarters to Boca Raton, where the LaserComb is also manufactured.
