NORTH SUTTON, N.H., July 12 -- Marc Burrell, a student of bioengineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas, is this year's recipient of the DJ Lovell Scholarship, awarded by SPIE (the International Society for Optical Engineering) and funded in part by Labsphere Inc., a maker of integrating spheres, systems and instruments for a variety of electro-optical test and measurement applications.
Burrell has concentrated on biomedical optics, medical imaging and signal processing with a focus on magnetic resonance imaging for patients with implantable cardiac devices.
The $7000 DJ Lovell Award recognizes students who are likely to make a long-range contribution to optics, photonics or a related field. Burrell, an undergraduate, has already published research, applied for several patents and won science competition sponsors including Intel, General Electric and Siemens Westinghouse.
Labsphere has contributed funds for the DJ Lovell Scholarship since its inception in 1986.
"Labsphere is dedicated to innovation in optics and photonics," said Tim Kardish, Labsphere's general Manager. "It's a pleasure to support students like Marc Burrell who show such promise in optics engineering, especially those who are applying technology to advances in medical science."
The 2005 DJ Lovell Scholarship will be presented at SPIE's annual awards banquet August 3 in San Diego, Calif.
