LEDs Topic of Intertech Study

PORTLAND, Maine, Nov. 1 -- Market researchers Intertech Corp. has begun a study to assess global market opportunities for light-emitting diodes (LEDs), to be completed in March 2003. It will include data on LED supply chain, technology status, applications, R&D roadmaps, comparisons to other light sources and display technology, costs, economics, environmental impacts, standardization metrics and system design.

"Advances in nanotechnology, compound semiconductor materials and enhanced manufacturing techniques are enabling a new generation of high-brightness blue and white LEDs," said Hugh Olmstead, Intertech's LED program director. "Replacing conventional lamps with LEDs in the US alone could generate energy savings of up to $100 billion by 2025, saving 120 gigawatts of electricity annually. The study will address the specific technical, business and market barriers that must be surmounted to achieve these savings."
