Kopin Buys Aixtron MOCVD Systems

Kopin Corp., a provider of heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) wafers for cellular phones and mobile communications devices, announced a new multiyear purchase and supply agreement for new Aixtron 12x4-inch (or 7x6-inch) integrated concept platform MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapor deposition) systems. Kopin said the purchase was driven by an increased demand for HBT wafers, due to wireless handset sales, and that it plans to increase HBT capacity by 50 percent in two years. The first two systems will be installed in Taunton, Mass., and are scheduled to produce HBT wafers for customers this year as part of Kopin's capacity expansion plan. Kopin said it will also increase use of existing systems at two manufacturing sites in Taunton, Mass., and at KTC, a licensed OEM of Kopin's HBT products in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

Glossary
heterojunction
A heterojunction is a junction formed between two different semiconductor materials with differing band gaps. These materials can be of the same or different types (e.g., both n-type, both p-type, or one n-type and one p-type), and they possess different electronic properties. Band gap difference: The primary characteristic is the difference in band gap energies between the two materials. This leads to unique electronic and optical properties at the interface. Energy band alignment:...
