JDS Uniphase Expands Datacom Capabilities

To strengthen its position in the optical data communications market, JDS Uniphase Corp. of San Jose, Calif., has purchased E2O Communications Inc., a manufacturer of optical transceivers for ESCON, ATM, SONET, Ethernet and Fibre Channel systems.

The technology developed by E2O of Calabasas, Calif., includes its long-wavelength, vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, which is used to enable 10 Gb/s enterprise and other applications.
JDS Uniphase will gain an expanded customer base, expertise in low-cost manufacturing and greater infrastructure efficiency as a result of the roughly $60 million cash transaction.
