SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 22, 2010 – Intevac Photonics, a subsidiary of Intevac Inc., has received a $3.5 million subcontract from the US Army for the development and evaluation of a 2-megapixel, digital night vision camera to be integrated onto the Apache helicopter. This camera will incorporate the company’s specialized sensor for extreme low light detection.

“This contract, for the evaluation of our digital night vision camera and sensor on an existing, major U.S. Army platform, is an important win for our business,” said Joe Pietras, executive vice president and general manager of Intevac Photonics. “This application represents a large-volume opportunity for our digital night vision camera and fits precisely with our strategy to be a leading supplier of digital low-light imaging products for vital U.S. military applications.”

In February, Intevac Photonics was awarded $6.85 million from the U.S. Navy for high-resolution low-light camera systems configured as monoculars, binoculars and goggles. The systems operate in the near-infrared to the short-wave infrared region of the spectrum.

Intevac Photonics develops and manufactures high-sensitivity imaging products and vision systems, as well as tabletop and handheld Raman instruments, for the military, industrial, medical and scientific markets.

Glossary
binoculars
Binoculars are optical instruments used for magnifying distant objects by using two parallel telescopes mounted side by side. They allow users to see distant objects more clearly and in greater detail than with the naked eye. Binoculars consist of lenses and prisms that gather and focus light from the viewed object, producing an enlarged image that is viewed through eyepieces. See also prism binoculars.
near-infrared
The shortest wavelengths of the infrared region, nominally 0.75 to 3 µm.
