Inrad Optics Receives SBIR Phase I Funding to Develop Pixelated Stilbene Arrays
Crystalline materials and optical components manufacturer Inrad Optics has received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award from the U.S. Department of Energy in support of its development of neutron imaging technology. The award will allow the company to develop pixelated Scintinel stilbene arrays. Inrad currently produces Scintinel stilbene, an organic scintillator for neutron detection.
The work is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, National Nuclear Security Administration. The detection and imaging of neutrons is a critical capability for nuclear nonproliferation applications that require the identification of plutonium and uranium.

Glossary
- scintillation
- 1. The variation in intensity of a light beam as it travels through the atmosphere. 2. In radiation physics, a light flash formed by an ionizing event in a phosphor; a flash formed when rapidly traveling particles, such as alpha particles, travel through matter. 3. In lasers, rapid changes in the levels of irradiance in the cross section of a laser beam.
- scintillation crystal
- A scintillation crystal, also known simply as a scintillator, is a material that emits light when it interacts with ionizing radiation such as gamma rays, x-rays, or charged particles. The emitted light, known as scintillation light, is typically in the visible or ultraviolet range and is proportional to the energy deposited by the incident radiation in the crystal.
