CLINTON, N.Y., Sept. 23, 2009 – Materials supplier Indium Corp. announced Tuesday it has acquired Reactive NanoTechnologies Inc. (RNT), a Hunt Valley, Md.-based maker of the electronics material NanoFoil®. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Indium said it will integrate RNT process and equipment and core staff into its Utica Business Park facility in Utica. The core RNT team, along with Indium personnel, will continue supporting the NanoFoil and NanoBond® business.

NanoFoil delivers precise, instantaneous heat energy for advanced joining applications. NanoBond bonds sputtering targets and is used in several electronics manufacturing applications, including LED assembly and thermal management.

“Indium’s presence in the global electronics materials market will allow NanoBond technology to proliferate more quickly and broadly. There is a strong synergy with the Indium Corporation solder, assembly and thermal interface materials product lines,” said Joe Grzyb, CEO of RNT.

“We expect this nanotechnology to enhance Indium Corporation’s diversity and strength as a materials supplier to the $2.8 billion sputtering target market as well as to enhance our position in the metallic thermal interface market, two application segments that are the primary focus of this business,” said Ross Berntson, Indium vice president of sales, marketing and technical support.

Glossary
indium
Metal used in components of the crystalline semiconductor alloys indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs), indium gallium arsenide phosphide (InGaAsP), and the binary semiconductor indium phosphide (InP). The first two are lattice-matched to InP as the light-emitting medium for lasers or light-emitting diodes in the 1.06- to 1.7-µm range, and the last are used as a substrate and cladding layer.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
sputtering
A vacuum deposition method in which the coating material (target) is removed from the surface of the coating source (cathode) by ion bombardment and deposited upon the substrates.
