IPG Photonics Awarded for Fiber Laser

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan 31 -- IPG Photonics Corp. received a 2004 Photonics Circle of Excellence Award, sponsored by Laurin Publishing, recognizing its 600-W sngle-mode ytterbium fiber laser, described as a combination of high fluence and true single-mode operation in a commercial product. The awards were presented during Photonics West 2005, held last week in San Jose.

The YLR-600 is "a totally monolithic, all-fiber format, two-stage device requiring no adjustment or alignment," IPG said. "The front and rear reflectors are fusion-pliced to the active single-mode fiber, resulting in a 300-W fiber laser oscillator operating at 1070 nanometers, with an M2 <1.05. The output of the oscillator is spliced to the amplifier stage, which adds more than 300 watts of power, resulting in total power of 600 watts. The amplifier is terminated by a multimeter passive single-mode cable and an output collimator that delivers the power without loss or beam distortion."

The company said the YLR-600 has demonstrated enhanced cutting, welding and scribing results for the industrial market and has stimulated intense interest on several government and scientific applications. Customers use IPG lasers in high-speed and remote welding and high-speed cutting and for drilling and surface modification for applications in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, construction, petroleum and shipbuilding industries.
