Gooch & Housego Acquiring EM4

ILMINSTER, England, Dec. 17, 2010 — Optical components and systems manufacturer Gooch & Housego announced Friday that it will acquire Boston-based EM4 Inc. Financial terms were not disclosed; the transaction is expected to be completed by the end of January.

EM4 makes optoelectronic components and subsystems for customers in the US and Europe. Its products include lasers, detectors and high-frequency receiver or transmitter electronics, primarily for aerospace and defense extreme environment applications, but also for the industrial and life sciences sectors.

Gooch and Housego (G&H) said EM4's active technology systems are an ideal complement to its passive fiber optics technologies, and the acquisition will strengthen G&H's presence in the aerospace and defense markets and allow it to migrate from its largely component-level product set of today to modules and subassemblies in the future.

G&H currently has eight facilities, five in the US and three in Europe, manufacturing acousto-optics, electro-optics, fiber optics, precision optics, RF electronics, optical modules & subsystems, imaging & light measurement systems and providing materials engineering & crystal growth.

Glossary
electronics
That branch of science involved in the study and utilization of the motion, emissions and behaviors of currents of electrical energy flowing through gases, vacuums, semiconductors and conductors, not to be confused with electrics, which deals primarily with the conduction of large currents of electricity through metals.
light
Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
optical component
One or more optical elements – typically cemented together - in an optical system that are treated as a single group; e.g., a beamsplitter, or a cemented doublet or triplet.
optoelectronic
Pertaining to a device that responds to optical power, emits or modifies optical radiation, or utilizes optical radiation for its internal operation. Any device that functions as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer. Electro-optic often is used erroneously as a synonym.
