CAMPINAS, Brazil, June 27 -- Global Crossing Ltd., an international provider of fiber optic networks based in Hamilton, Bermuda, has chosen Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, N.J.) to provide optical networking products for its next-generation global network project.
Lucent's WaveStar OLS 400G will be used in the construction of the Brazilian backhaul segment of the undertaking. The 400G will be the first 80-channel, dense wavelength division multiplexing system used in South America, said Lucent.
The network will link nearly every major city in Latin America to cities all over the world, the company said. The network will start in Brazil, using Lucent's 80-channel system to connect the cities of Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. With Lucent's 80-channel system, fiber that could previously handle only one stream of information can carry up to 80 streams at the same time. This technology will not only enhance carriers in the Latin American region of Global Crossing's network, but also in North America, Europe and Asia, the company said.
