Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and SPIE have partnered to host the Photonics for Quantum 2022 event June 6-9 at the RIT campus. The four-day event will feature talks and research on a variety of subjects. The program features 55 presentations, including 17 keynote and invited speakers from academia and industry, as well as several networking opportunities. Registration is currently open.

CAMBRIDGE, England — MicroLED and semiconductor technology company Porotech has entered a strategic partnership with IQE plc, a supplier of compound semiconductor wafer products and advanced materials. The aim of the partnership is to develop, scale, and commercialize Porotech’s RGB-capable 200- to 300-mm GaN-based wafers for ultrahigh-density and efficient microLEDs. IQE will serve as Porotech’s epitaxial wafer foundry partner, providing GaN MOCVD capacity for the volume production of Porotech’s PoroGaN microdisplay platforms.

MILL VALLEY, Calif. — Ambient Photonics has raised $31 million in a series A financing round led by Amazon via its Climate Pledge Fund and Ecosystem Integrity Fund, with Tony Fadell’s Future Shape and I Squared Capital participating. The financing will allow Ambient to build the largest U.S.-based low-light solar cell production facility. The facility’s fully automated production line and capacity for tens of millions of units per year will enable Ambient to scale its low-cost high-power density solar cells to mass market adoption.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Quanergy Systems, a provider of lidar sensors and smart 3D solutions, successfully achieved a range detection of 250 m with its optical phased array technology. The demonstration advances the path toward commercialization of its S3 Series Lidar, a solid-state sensor using a scalable CMOS silicon manufacturing process designed for cost-effective, mass-market production.

NEWTON, Mass. — TissueVision has opened an expanded 10,500-sq-ft headquarters and manufacturing facility to increase capacity for its growing imaging services business. TissueVision’s imaging services business offers specialized 3D spatial biology solutions using Serial Two-Photon Plus (STP2) technology. The facility features a dedicated imaging room, a biosafety level 2 wet lab, and manufacturing resources.

MILAN, Italy — NIREOS will receive a $1.8 million (€1.5 million) grant from the European Innovation Council. The project, called HYPERIA, aims to develop a hyperspectral imaging camera based on time-domain Fourier-transform spectroscopy. The technology enables a previously inaccessible level of sensitivity, even in low light and covering a far broader range from the visible spectrum to SWIR.

OXFORD, England — Salience Labs has raised a seed round of $11.5 million to develop an ultrahigh-speed multichip processor combining photonics and electronics to accelerate exponential advances in AI. The round was led by Cambridge Innovation Capital and Oxford Science Enterprises, with participation by Oxford Investment Consultants, former CEO of Dialog Semiconductor Jalal Bagherli, Silicon Catalyst, the Goh Family Office in Singapore, and Arm-backed Deeptech Labs. Salience Labs is a spinout of the University of Oxford and the University of Münster in 2021 to commercialize an ultrahigh-speed multichip processor that packages a photonics chip together with standard electronics. The technology is highly scalable, capable of stacking up to 64 vectors into a beam of light. By using a broad bandwidth of light to execute operations, Salience Labs delivers massively parallel processing performance within a given power envelope.

metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
