Firm Develops Flexible, Transparent Displays for Military Use

Universal Display Corp. will determine the suitability of three of its organic LED technologies -- high-efficiency phosphorescent, transparent and flexible LEDs -- for use as clear, low-power, high-resolution displays for the US Army. Such a full-color, conformable display device could eventually be mounted inside the helmets of soldiers. A $69,951 Phase 1 Small Business Innovative Research contract from the Army will support the work.

Helmet-mounted display systems are also being incorporated into industrial, medical and consumer applications. This technology, which offers a wide viewing angle, may also be used in novel applications such as wearable electronics and transparent displays on windows and windshields.
