EPS’ Quantum Division Announces ‘Science of Light’ Prize

The Quantum Electronics and Optics Division (QEOD) of the European Physical Society (EPS) is accepting nominations for its biennial Research into the Science of Light prize until Nov. 22.

The prize is awarded every two years in recognition of recent work by one or more individuals for scientific excellence in the area of electromagnetic science across the entire spectrum of electromagnetic waves. The work must be such that a significant component of it was performed during the period of five years prior to the award. In addition, the award will recognize research for which a significant portion of the work was carried out in Europe or in cooperation with European researchers, and it may be given for either pure or applied research.

EPS’ aim is to promote physics and physicists in Europe. For more information on the prize, visit www.eps.org.

The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
