The European Photonics Industry Consortium, based in Paris, works with industries, universities and the European Commission to promote the industry in Europe and throughout the world. It owns and maintains the Photonic Technologies Roadmap and, through the Accord program, works with universities to train students in photonics technologies.

The consortium conducts market and technology studies and works with consulting groups to produce and distribute reports. In October, it released the publication “Photonics in Broadband Communications,” which covers the presentations and discussions of a workshop on broadband access. The event was attended by representatives of industry development centers worldwide. The 350-page document, which is free of charge, addresses the role of photonics in industry as well as the prospects for photonic components and systems. It includes a report on a panel debate and presentations in audio format.

In August, the organization issued a free 80-page document titled “Biophotonics: A Short Course,” which represents an event that was organized by the Polytechnic University of Torino in Italy. The course included lectures by James Wilkenson of the University of Southampton in the UK and Martin Kristensen of the University of Aarhus in Denmark.

Working with Kienbaum Management Consultants GmbH of Düsseldorf, Germany, the consortium will release “Laser Applications in Europe” this month. The 250-page report will cover the use of high-power lasers for manufacturing in a variety of applications and in a number of industries. It focuses on applications that are projected to grow in volume and revenue. The cost of the document was not set at press time.
