Richard Hitt was named president and CEO of Hypres Inc., an Elmsford, N.Y.-based developer of superconductor microelectronics technology. Hitt was formerly vice president and general manager of government products and systems. He succeeds Jack Rosa, who is retiring from the board of directors and as CEO . . .    Nozomi Photonics, a Tokyo-based maker of high-speed optical switches, has secured $8 million in funding led by Globis Capital Partners, a Japanese venture capital firm. Takuo Inoue, a principal at Globis, and Akihito Ogino, a partner at Tokio Marine Capital, will be joining Nozomi's board.    . . .   L-3 Communications has named Thomas M. Ripp president of its Security and Detection Systems subsidiary, in Woburn, Mass., effective Sept. 12. He will succeed Allen Barber, who was named group senior vice president of strategic planning for L-3's New York-based Sensors and Simulation Group, which is focused on the electro-optical/infrared, precision and navigation, and simulation and acoustics markets. Ripp was formerly vice president of sensors and advanced packaging for Vectron International.    . . . Troika Networks Inc., a Westlake Village, Calif., provider of network-based storage services technologies, has been granted a US patent involving the use of Fibre Channel for high-performance computing and storage functions.

superconductor
A metal, alloy or compound that loses its electrical resistance at temperatures below a certain transition temperature referred to as Tc. High-temperature superconductors occur near 130 K, while low-temperature superconductors have Tc in the range of 4 to 18 K.
