Heino Finkelmann, a professor in the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry at the University of Freiburg in Germany, and Mark Warner, a professor of physics in the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge in England, were awarded the 2003 Agilent Technologies Europhysics Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Condensed Matter Physics from the European Physical Society for their pioneering work in the field of polymer liquid crystals. The scientists demonstrated that temperature change or the application of voltage can cause remarkable shape changes in polymer liquid crystals. These effects could be used to create applications such artificial muscles that stretch or shrink under electronic control, or lasers that can be tuned by simply stretching a rubber-like membrane.. . .Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH has named Three-Five Systems Inc., a provider of electronic manufacturing services and display solutions, as its exclusive engineering services and OLED marketing partner in the US.
